Born in 1962 in Wiesbaden, Germany, Brigadier General Günter Katz began his military career in July 1982 in the German Air Force Officer School.

Following his Euro NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training 1984 to 1985, he served as a fighter pilot and a instructor pilot with Fighter Wing 71 until 1992.

After two years as Operations Officer in Fighter Squadron 711 he assumed


command of Fighter Sqadron 712 in Wittmund in northern Germany from 1994 to 1996.

From 1996 through 1998, he attended the Command and General Staff Officer Course at the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College in Hamburg, followed by an assignment to HQ AIRNORTH in Ramstein/Germany as Staff Officer to the Commander.

His next assignment took him in 2000 to the Armed Forces Staff of the Federal Ministry of Defence in Berlin. As desk officer he dealt with all bilateral military-political relations concerning the Former Soviet Republics, France and the Netherlands.

Brigadier General Katz served as spokesman German Air Force from 2003 to 2004. In 2004 he assumed command of Fighter Wing 73 in Laage in northern Germany, the first EUROFIGHTER / TYPHOON  Wing in the German Air Force.

Prior to his deployment as ISAF Spokesman, Brigadier General Katz was the head of Department for German Security Policy and bilateral relations at the Ministry of Defence in Berlin.

Brigadier General Katz assumed responsibilities as ISAF Spokesman, Headquarters ISAF, Kabul, in June 2012.

He is married to Andrea and they have two sons.
