US-funded, historic Salang Hospital providing critical care to mountain villagers

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (January 28, 2014) - Located 11,000 feet above sea level in the rugged mountains of Parwan Province, the U.S.-funded 20-bed Salang Hospital represents a significant step forward in medical services for local Afghans who previously had access to minimal medical care and were forced to travel 30 kilometers down treacherous mountain roads to obtain higher level hospital services.

Coalition improves oversight of literacy contracts and training programs

KABUL, Afghanistan (JAN 27, 2014) - The International Security Assistance Force announced it has implemented new literacy and language training contracts for the Afghan National Security Forces to improve delivery and oversight of the services purchased. The new contracts were awarded as ISAF has identified shortfalls in the terms and conditions of the initial service contract.

USFOR-A condemns ordered release of detainees

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (January 27, 2014) - United States Forces-Afghanistan has learned that under direction of the Afghan government, the Afghan Review Board, led by Abdul Shakoor Dadras, has ordered the release of the first 37 of 88 dangerous individuals under dispute who are legitimate threats to security and for whom there is strong evidence or investigative leads supporting prosecution or further investigation.

US Forces continue to improve management of ANSF funds

A recent audit by the Special Investigator General for Afghan Reconstruction found that the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan (CSTC-A) has taken steps to mitigate financial management weaknesses identified at the Ministries of the Interior and Defense and improve its oversight of Direct Assistance Funds. CSTC-A appreciates SIGAR’s acknowledgement that its processes for managing US direct assistance and international donor funds continue to improve, mature, and evolve as the capabilities of the Afghan government increase. CSTC-A has improved accounting practices, expanded budgetary controls for the execution of funds, set goals for execution rates, and conducted risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities in the Ministries of Finance, Defense and Interior (MOF, MOD and MOI) financial management systems and capabilities.

Response to palace statement regarding Nuristan

We can confirm that ISAF conducted airstrikes in Kunar province near the Nuristan provincial boundary on November 20 against known Al Qaeda Arab and Taliban leaders. As a result, six terrorists and insurgents were killed. This operation is consistent with ISAF's ongoing mission to reduce the capability and will of the insurgency, and it was carefully executed to avoid civilian casualties or damage to Afghan homes. We have no evidence of civilian casualties related to this operation

ISAF Statement on incident in Helmand province:

COALITION REGRETS CIVILIAN CASUALTIES The International Security Assistance Force confirms that an airstrike was conducted on a known insurgent riding a motorbike in Helmand province yesterday. We are aware that according to the Governor of Helmand Province that in addition to the insurgent being killed, there was one child also killed and two women injured. ISAF, along with Afghan authorities, will immediately conduct an investigation into the incident.

Joint ISAF/MoTCA Fire Training Facilities Open at Kabul International Airport

Recently, coalition firefighters trained at the new joint ISAF/MoTCA fire training facilities at Kabul international Airport. Twenty-two fire fighters took part in a live training exercise which simulated a commercial passenger aircraft accident with both internal and external fires.

KABUL, Afghanistan (October 17, 2013) - The international community’s investment in the Afghan mining industry has spurred impressive economic growth and business stability across Regional Command West. As mining expands and exploration grows – experts currently estimate that billions of metric tons of some of the world’s best quality stone lie untapped in Herat Province – foreign investors from a vast lineup of nations including Italy, India, China, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates are actively seeking Afghanistan stone. The relatively recent foreign investment has already created an impressive economic spillover effect: over just the last five years, the number of marble firms in myriad production phases has increased from four to over forty, while the government contracted quarries grew from two to twelve, together employing over 5,000 people in the marble and related sectors. If present trends hold and the industry continues to mature, it could generate nearly $700 million in annual exports by 2020.

Afghanistan's Air Force Receives New C-130 Aircraft

Two cargo planes were dedicated during a formal ceremony attended by the Afghan National Security Force and International Security Assistance force senior leaders, as well as Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan dignitaries. The Afghan Air Force took delivery of its first two C-130 cargo planes that will boost ANSF military capabilities as they assume the lead for the security of their country.
