BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (Sept. 1, 2010)
– Insurgent-related attacks killed three Afghan civilians and wounded 32 more within the last seven days.

Below are highlights of several of these attacks that occurred within five of the 14 provinces throughout Eastern Afghanistan.

Insurgents killed one Afghan citizen and wounded two in a small arms fire attack on their convoy in Andar District, Ghazni Aug. 26. One of the wounded was evacuated to a treatment center.

One Afghan citizen was killed and seven were wounded when an Afghan man wearing a suicide vest walked into a local store and detonated his vest in Bermal District, Paktika Province Aug. 28. Afghan and Coalition Security Forces from a forward operating base in the area responded to the explosion and medically evacuated the wounded.

On the same day, insurgents killed one civilian and wounded five civilian when they attacked a coalition unit in Kunar Province.  The unit treated two of the civilians on site and medically evacuated three of them to a nearby hospital.

Insurgents also wounded two civilians when they tried to attack a combat outpost in Paktiya Province with indirect fire Aug. 28.  Two rounds hit the Shista Bazaar. The civilians were taken to the Jajil Health Clinic.

“Afghanistan’s enemies continue to harm innocent people and destroy their livelihood. They do nothing to help the people of Afghanistan,” said Maj. Patrick Seiber, Regional Command-East director of public affairs.  “They attempt to destroy dreams of the Afghan people, but they will never overcome the strong will of the Afghan people.”

Afghans can contact their local government offices or Afghan National Security Forces to report any illegal weapons or Taliban activity. When their information is confirmed, they will be rewarded for useful information from the Guardians of Safety Program.
