PRESS RELEASE – Logar, Pole Alam

Several days ago a heavy rain has affected Logar resulting in fast flooding. The water from surrounding mountains has flooded otherwise dried wadis and destroyed villages. All the crop and some of the qalats, traditional Afghan houses made from mud, were destroyed.

“Ninety percent of houses were destroyed in the villages of Khoshi District. It is a tragedy,” says Noorullah Stanikzai, journalist from Logar.

“I have never seen anything like this. I have no idea, what to do. I have six children. Half of my house was destroyed by water, our field was flooded. We will lose the whole harvest,” one of the farmers, Nasim Jan Mohammad, describes.

The soldiers and civilian employees of Czech PRT, which is based in Logar Province, have reacted instantly. They have sent immediate humanitarian help to the destroyed areas and the day after the floods 68 families of Hesarak area in Logar have received help: drinking water, rice, flour, oil, blankets.

In last week, more help was being organized and distributed. In Baraki Barak, Khoshi and Mohammed Agha Districts packages were prepared by Czech PRT for families affected by floods.

“We have coordinated all the help with local government and the elders. They have given us the lists of families who have lost their homes. Together with the subgovernors and ANA we distribute basic help for the first weeks: blankets, tents, drinking water, food and cooking pots, hygiene kits, disinfections,” says Matyas Zrno, head of the civilian part of Czech PRT.

Czech PRT is also implementing projects of retention walls, that should prevent the water from flooding villages again in future.

Czech PRT, consisting of ten civilian experts and 261 soldiers, has been assisting people of Logar since March 2008. Support of education, health system, infrastructure, security, agriculture, irrigation and independent journalism are among its main areas of activity. Its annual budget is 4,5 mil USD.
