FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2010-02-RCE-CA-071

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Combined Joint Task Force-82 released the findings and recommendations from an investigation of the Sept. 8 ambush on a joint patrol of Afghan National Security Forces and Coalition forces in Ganjgal village, Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

Approximately 100 Afghan National Security Forces and embedded U.S. advisors fought off a reported 100-150 enemy forces. The ambush resulted in the death of five U.S. servicemembers, eight Afghan National Army soldiers, and an Afghan interpreter.

The investigation revealed that the ANA, Afghan Border Police, and U.S. servicemembers on the ground successfully fought off a complex attack and all servicemembers, both ANSF and U.S., fought courageously throughout the event. Several servicemembers are being recommended for valorous awards.

The investigation concluded that appropriate personnel were not involved with the critical pre-mission planning of fire and air support. This, coupled with the severity of the situation, resulted in a delay in receiving timely support.

Based on the recommendations in the investigation, Maj. Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti, CJTF-82 commanding general, took appropriate action regarding all personnel involved. Scaparrotti also issued guidance to the senior leadership throughout Regional Command East to ensure the lessons learned from the investigation findings and recommendations were incorporated into current practices to prevent or mitigate future incidents.
