KABUL, Afghanistan (Sept. 18) - An Afghan and coalition security force killed at least four insurgents and detained one during an operation in Kunduz province Friday.

The security force was in pursuit of a Taliban commander responsible for an early September remote-controlled improvised explosive device attack on Afghan National Police patrol, and a former Taliban commander who is currently a senior foreign fighter and weapons facilitator.

The targeted individuals, in concert with Taliban leadership in Pakistan, coordinate logistical support and attacks in the Gor Tappa region.

Intelligence led the security force to target several compounds in Osman Zay in Kunduz district to search for the Taliban leaders. Insurgents shot small arms, machine gun, and rocket-propelled grenade fire at the security force throughout the entire operation. The combined ground force and coalition aircraft returned fire.

While the security force was unable to complete a full assessment of the engagement areas, they were able to confirm four insurgents were killed. The insurgents had been armed with an RPG launcher, grenades and a machine gun.

Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit several buildings peacefully and then cleared and secured the compounds. After questioning residents on scene, the assault force detained one insurgent.
