KABUL, Afghanistan (September 10, 2011) –
A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader in Muhammad Aghah district, Logar province, yesterday.

The leader is responsible roadside bomb attacks against Afghan forces in the region.

During the operation, the security force was fired upon by the insurgents, who were armed with AK-47 assault rifles. Responding to the threat, the force returned fire, killing them. Multiple grenades and weapons were seized during the operation.

South

Combined Afghan and coalition security forces detained multiple suspected insurgents while searching for Taliban leaders in Nawah-ye Barakzai and Nahr-e Saraj districts, Helmand province, yesterday. The leaders are responsible for numerous attacks against coalition forces in the district.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent while searching for a Taliban leader in Shah Wali Kot district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The Taliban leader is responsible for the transport of weapons and rockets in the district.

In Zharay district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache, yesterday. The cache consisted of one 5 gallon jug of homemade explosives, 150 7.62mm rounds, two magazines, two machine guns, one rocket propelled grenade launcher, one hand grenade, a mine and a battery pack. The cache was seized and will be safely destroyed at a later date.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani network leader in Gardez district, Paktiya province, yesterday. The leader plans ambushes, roadside bomb and rocket attacks against coalition forces.

Finally, in Sherzad district, Nangarhar province, a coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache, yesterday. The patrol seized one .38 caliber pistol, 13 grenade bodies and approximately 200 7.62mm rounds. The cache will be safely destroyed at a later date.
