KABUL, Afghanistan (Dec. 31) – Large narcotic and weapon caches were discovered by International Security Assistance Force during separate clearing operations in eastern Afghanistan today. 

In Nangarhar province, an ISAF patrol found a drug cache in Sherzad district consisting of 3,000 pounds (1,360 kilograms) of heroin, 110 gallons (416 litres) of chemicals, 160 pounds (72 kg) of soda ash, 10 gallons (37 litres) of ammonia and several drug processing kits.

In the same area, ISAF also discovered a weapons cache during a separate clearing operation consisting of 12 rocket-propelled grenades, one RPG launcher, two AK-47s, 12 AK-47 magazines and one bag of ammonium nitrate.

In Ghazni and Khost provinces, patrols discovered two weapons caches in Ghazni and Terayzai districts. The cache consisted of 24 82 mm mortar rounds, five AK-47s, 23 AK-47 magazines and 800 7.62 mm rounds.  

Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons, explosives and drugs from all provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
Also today, an Afghan National Security and ISAF patrol found four improvised explosive devices near a school in Kunduz province.

After identifying the IEDs, a combined patrol conducted a disposal operation to make the school area safe. The controlled detonation caused minor damages to the school because one of three devices consisted of 300 pounds (136 kg) of homemade explosives and it was not safe to move it. ISAF will pay for repairs.
