Herat, Afghanistan, (9 Feb, 2012) – Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), Admiral James G. Stavridis, conducted an on-site survey of ISAF Regional Command West (RC West) in Camp Arena, Herat.

Greeted upon arrival by RC West Commander, Brigadier General Luciano Portolano (IT Army), SACEUR received an overview of the situation in the region and on principal security, governance and development issues regarding current and future operations in the area under the Italian responsibility.

During his visit Admiral Stavridis also met with Afghan National Security Forces Commanders, the Governor of Herat and local GIRoA representatives, who briefed him on the transition progress in the area.

At the conclusion of his visit, SACEUR met with Gen Portolano, to whom he expressed his personal appreciation for the excellent job done by Regional Command West.
