Brigadier General Carmine Masiello

Commander, ISAF Regional Command - West

Brigadier General Carmine Masiello was commissioned through the Military Academy into the Artillery in September 1983.

Following the specialisation training in Turin (1983-1985), he was then assigned to Livorno as Deputy Battery Commander, later as Battery Commander, 1st Artillery Paratroopers Battalion, 185th Artillery Paratroopers Regiment, FOLGORE Airborne Brigade. Through his service in the operational units, he also served as Cadet Platoon Commander at the Military Academy. In this period he participated in OPERATION AIRONE, Kurdistan and OPERATION IBIS, Somalia.

From 1993 to 1995 he attended the 120th General Staff Course and the Advanced Course at the French Joint Defence College. In 1996 he participated in OPERATION IFOR, Bosnia and Herzegovina. From 1997 to 1998 he attended the 120th Advanced General Staff Course and the 4th Advanced Command Staff Course at the Italian Joint Defence College. He then served as Staff Officer in the Plans and Policy Office at the Italian Army General Staff.

From 2001 to 2007 he served at Italian Army General Staff as Deputy Military Assistant to the Army Chief of Staff.

BG Masiello’s command experience include a tour as: Commander of the 1st Target Acquisition Battalion (200-2001); Commander of 185th Reconnaissance and Targets Acquisition Regiment (2008- 2009); Commander of the FOLGORE Airborne Brigade (September 2010 – March 2011).

In 2008, before taking command of the 185th Regiment, he participated as Chief of Special Staff of Force Commander in OPERATION UNIFIL, Lebanon. Currently he is the Commanding General of the Regional Command West, Afghanistan.

BG Masiello’s attended numerous courses include:
- Parachute Course (July 1982), Italy ;
- Combat Patrol Course (March 1987), Italy;
- Sports Instructor Course (January 1986), Italy;
- Military Jump Director (February 1991), Italy;
- Parachute Jump Wing Course (April 1992), Italy;
- French, Canadian, Belgian, U.S. and Jordanian Parachute Qualifications;
- Field Artillery Officer Preparatory and Advanced Course, (June –December 1992), United States;
- Sky Basic Course (November-December 2000), Italy;
 - Mountain Climbing Basic Course (June-July 2001), Italy.

 He has been awarded the following decorations:
- The Officer Rank of the Italian Republic Military Order;
- Italian Army Bronze Meritorious Medal;
 - Service Silver Cross;
- Long Service Parachuting Silver Medal;
- Italian Commemorative Cross for Peace Operations Abroad, the UN Kurdistan Medal, the UN Somalia Medal, the NATO Iraqi Medal and the UN Lebanon Medal;
- the Silver Medal of the French Republic National Defence;
- the Military Merit Cross with white distinctive Spanish Army;
- Marechal Hermes Medal of Brazil Army;

Brigadier General Masiello holds a University Degree in Political Science, Strategic Science, level 2 of International and Diplomatic Sciences, European Studies Masters and the Scientific Specialization Certification for Organization of Cooperation and European Integration. He speaks English, French and Spanish.

He is married to Federica and they have a daughter and a son.
