Lieutenant General Volker Wieker

Born in Delmenhorst (GE) 01 March 1954

Volker Wieker joined the Federal Armed Forces in July 1974 and was subsequently trained as artillery officer.  

After his promotion to Lieutenant and the completion of his studies in surveying at the Federal Armed Forces’ University in Munich, he held all basic posts for an artillery officer such as platoon leader, battery officer and battery commander. His military home during that time was 315 Armoured Artillery Battalion in Wildeshausen.

From October 1987 to September 1989, he attended the 30th General Staff Officer Course at the Command and General Staff College (Führungsakademie) in Hamburg. Wiekers assignment as Assistant Branch Chief in the Personnel Division of the Federal Ministry of Defence, Bonn, followed the course. Subsequently he completed the Command and General Staff Officer Course of the US Army in Fort Leavenworth, USA and was then assigned as G3 Staff Officer to 21 Armoured Brigade in Augustdorf.

From 1993 to 1996, he commanded the 215 Armoured Artillery Battalion in Augustdorf. This assignment was followed by an employment in the German Army Contingent IFOR (Bosnia-Herzegovina) as Staff Officer for Training and Operations and as Chief of the Operations Centre. He then became Executive Assistant with the Administrative Control of the Federal Ministry of Defence in Bonn.

From 1997 to 1999, Lieutenant General Wieker was the Military Assistant of the Federal Minister of Defence. Subsequently, he became Chief of the “Army Development” working group in the Army Staff.  

At the end of 1999, Lieutenant General Wieker took over the command of Armoured Infantry Brigade 40 “Mecklenburg” in Schwerin. In this assignment he commanded the 3rd KFOR Contingent (Kosovo) as Commander Multinational Brigade South and National Commander in Theatre from May 2001 to December 2001.  

In 2002, he became Chief of Staff of the Army Office in Cologne. In March 2004, he took over official duties as Chief of Staff in the Army Staff.  

As of 27 September 2007, he was the Deputy Commanding General and as of 02 July 2008 he is the Commanding General of 1 German-Netherlands Corps in Münster.  

Volker Wieker is married. He and his wife Sabine have two children.
