Qal´eh-ye Now, Afghanistan (August 22, 2010) – Following a complex reintegration and reconciliation process led by the National Directorate of Security (NDS) and the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) with ISAF’s support, a 21-insurgent group has turned in their weapons in Qal´eh-ye Now, capital of Badghis Province. This group was operating in Moqur area and in Badghis province.
Once the weapons were turned in, a press conference was held in Marco Polo Hotel, where the Provincial Governor – Delbar Jan Arman- condemned the insurgency actions and remarked the courage of these reintegrated insurgents who took the path of peace, so needed in Afghanistan. The Governor also expressed his satisfaction for the successful process that was accomplished and stated: “this is the right way to build the reconstruction and development in Afghanistan”, encouraging other insurgents to rejoin their Afghan brothers.
The group leader signed the delivery certificates of a number of rifles, machine-guns, rocket-propelled grenades and short-range radios. Each disarmed insurgent received a reintegration certificate.
The public event was also attended by the Badghis’ Deputy Governor- Haji Abdul Ghani -, the provincial head of NDS, the head of Criminal Investigation of Afghan National Police - General Gholan -, the Deputy Commander of the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Badghis province – Lieutenant Colonel Escamez- and a number of elders and local media from Badghis province.
