COMKAF has three basic responsibilities and authorities: Base or “garrison” commander for all tenant units; Senior airfield authority; and the Force Protection Task Force commander. COMKAF maintains ultimate authority over the tenant units (more than 20,000 service members from 20 troop contributing nations) garrisoned and contract civilians (more than 11,000) and has the sole responsibility for their protection and security. COMKAF leads a multi-national force protection capability to secure the airfield and surrounding GDA. KAF is the busiest single runway operation in the world and NATO’s largest air base. It serves as a major logistics hub for the coalition, operations base for more than 395 aircraft and supports more than 24,000 aircraft movements per month. The GIRoA civilian Kandahar International Airport is located within the confines of KAF.
